KC-area Non-profits Receive Grants, Share Causes at Grantham University
By Grantham University
LENEXA, Kan., July 9, 2018 — In late June, Grantham University held its Grantham Gives Back Award Ceremony and Volunteer Fair at the university’s Lenexa campus. The event shined a light on the important work of several Kansas City-area non-profits, and featured the online university’s presentation of community grants to support the groups’ missions.
Representatives from seven separate organizations attended the ceremony, and each received $3,000 to help further its cause. Grantham’s dedicated grant committee determined the recipients, and distributed the funds equally from a total of $21,000 collected through employee fundraising programs during the year.
“Volunteering and charitable efforts have long been an important part of Grantham University’s identity,” said Lily Carpio, Grantham’s chief financial officer and one of the executive sponsors of Grantham Gives Back. “Our culture is built on service and support, not only for our students and alumni, but also for the community in which we live and work every day.”
The seven non-profits in attendance included:
- American Fallen Warrior Memorial Foundation
- DEBATE – Kansas City (DKC)
- Growing Futures Early Education Center
- Johnson County NAACP
- Prison Fellowship
- United Way of Greater Kansas City
- Veterans’ Voices Writing Project
After the ceremony, university employees spent time visiting with the organizations, and learning more about their respective missions and available volunteer opportunities.
“Each year, our employees – who we proudly refer to as ‘Life Changers’ – are given a full day of paid time amid their regular work schedule to get out in the community and volunteer with an organization they choose,” said Carpio. “It’s all about witnessing in person the amazing things that can come from giving back.”
Grantham will begin accepting applications for its second cycle of community grants on August 1. To learn more about application criteria and guidelines, please visit the Grantham Gives Back page.
